Seminar in Stockholm: Education in Afghanistan post-transition: realistic priorities to secure success

Monday 21 November 2011, 05:00pm - 07:30pm
Despite being the great success story of reconstruction, Afghanistan’s education system is facing challenging years ahead. The World Bank recently estimated that the salary base of Afghan central ministries will be cut by 30 % as part of the transition process. Donors are pushing for an increased decentralization of governance and most analysts predict reduced funding for all priority programmes including education. At the same time education in Afghanistan is going from strength to strength with more than 7 million children enrolled this year, as opposed 0,9 million children 2001. All levels of education, primary to tertiary, are developing with a sevenfold increase of enrolment in higher education since 2001. In 2011 the Afghan Government is set to join the Education for all ‘Fast track initiative’, an accelerated process for reaching Millenium Development Goals on Education. How can Afghan Government, NGOs and donors work together to harness the success of Afghan education in a rapidly changing environment? SCA, ENNA and the Canadian Embassy hereby invite you to a public seminar where senior experts will discuss the future of education with the Afghan Minister of Education Farook Wardak.
Location : Canadian Embassy, Stockholm
